NOTE: 3:1-14 - John's Message of Repentance - Luke pinpoints the exacttime of the beginning of John the Baptist's ministry - by pointing out the various secular events that coincided with this time. What a blessing to Theophilus to receive a treatise from such a carefulhistorian. Not all historical writers are as carefulas Luke!

Isaiah prophesies centuries earlier of the extraordinary ministry of preparation for Jesus the Messiah, that John the Baptist performed. John's ministry was so spectacular and accompanied with such authority, that one can understand that the crowds could wonder - “Is thisthe Messiah?” John quickly freed himself from such a false expectation.

Then for three types of hearers John give wise counsel in the light of true fruit of repentance. For the general crowds he encourages a sharing of clothing and food for those without. This out-communizes Communism, and has no corruption of the former. Marxism is bankrupt. For the publicans: - No cheating in collecting taxes for the authorities. See Zachaeus for making this sin right. For soldiers: No extortionary acts; no false accusations; andcontentment with wages. This latter word needs to be heard by union leaders and workers. In times of economic stress when there isn'tthe money being demanded - this wordwould go a long way in helping a land to pull through rough times! At one time in our land - capitalists defrauded the worker. One man had strikes for this cause - even his family members said it was wrong as a philanthropist to build libraries etc. - when laborers were being cheated from rightful wages and safety conditions at work. Thatis one ditch; the other is where labor unions demand from companies what they just don't have! - the otherditch! We need to get on the balance of the broad highway - a difficult - but most important balance.

3:15-17 - All of us need to evaluate our ministries in the light of what Jesus has done for us. No comparison! He outshines us as the sun outshines the mere reflective light of the moon! No wonder Jesus said of John - Among those born of women - none is greater than John. Yet - the least in the Kingdom of God is greater than John. John lived in the transition time between OT and NT times, and did not have the privilege of living out his life through the Passover of Jesus and the Pentecost of the Holy Spirit.

Then John describes the baptism of the Holy Spirit by Jesus in a two-fold manner: Empowerment by the Holy Spirit filling and immersing us; but also the fireof the Spirit to cleanse and refine us. We need it all!

3:18-20 - But John was correct - “I must decrease- but Hemust increase!” The removal of John by God so that Jesus could shine out pre-eminent - was important and necessary. This- John fully understood and bowed to. May we like John say - When we have done our best for Jesus - We've only donewhat is our dutyto do - according to the gifting by gracewhich we each have received. All glory belongs to Jesus alone!
